For my condition I chose to use was an eating disorder, anorexia. Anorexia is characterized by a distorted body image, with an unwarranted fear of being overweight. Symptoms include trying to maintain a below-normal weight through starvation or too much exercise. The goal of medical treatment is to restore normal weight. Patients would go to therapy to help with self-esteem and behavior changes

The first website I chose was https://anad.org/Links to an external site.. The website is based on the use of support groups but also individual help. It is a “.org” so it is funded by noncommercial organization. On their website you can see the donations people make and they have a spot you can go and donate yourself. Once you donate you can see your name pop up saying you have donated. On the website, they make it clear their purpose is to help anyone who is struggling. They have help lines, events you can attend in person or online to help reach the community. Lastly the reason I chose this website is they provide evidenced based statics on different eating disorders. Along with giving you where they got every bit of information from. From a nursing perspective this is a great website to be able to reach out to the community of people struggling with this condition. Along with seeing the different statics and getting understanding of who it effects and whys to help.

The second site I chose was https://www.eatingrecoverycenter.com/support-groups . It had the same things as the first website I chose. I liked this website like the other because when it asked for your person information, it gave reasoning why. For example, for anyone struggling with anorexia there is a free assessment when they can put in their information. However, the site does not require them to, they can just to explore the site. People who are struggling with a condition may get scared to put any information in causing them to not get help. So as a nursing perspective I like that the website does that. The purpose of the site is very obvious that it is here to help not just get information.

Lastly, I chose an application to put on a phone “recovery record: eating disorder management”. The app is designed to help manage the patient’s recovery while staying compassion. They keep a record of their meals, thoughts and feelings. They can also customize it to help meet their over all goals. The app connects to the medical team to help with support. As a nursing perspective it is a great choice. Most of these conditions are in younger adults/ teenagers. So having it on their phones as an app gives them an advantage when serious about getting help.

The three websites I found to educate and support people with Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis are the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation (.org), Circa.org and mycrohnsandcolitisteam.com. The critical component that I used to evaluate them is their credibility, the first two sites are led by doctors specializing in gastroenterology. The Crohns and Colitis foundation has published 2 EBP journals called Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Crohns & Colitis 360. It is funded by noncommercial organizations and its purpose is to improve the life of people experiencing the disease by expanding clinical research and education programs while offering support and advocating to IBD patients. This site support diversity because their core values include inclusion among others, the website is available in different languages and they have global partners all over the world.

Circa.org is focused on support and education of children and their families with IBD. Just like the above website, they offer research, support and education. IBD can affect all ages and i think it’s great that there is a website that’s specific to help children. This website also have social media accounts such as FB, Instagram and Twitter which makes it more accessible to the younger generation. The website gives children and parents advises about how to handle stress related to school, exams, and also offers advises to teachers with pupils that suffer from IBD and how they can support them. I find this really informative, considerate and unique.

Lastly, the mycrohnsandcolitisteam.com is a community group and social network for those with IBD. People with IBD can sign up for free and interact with other people that experience the same illness, share stories, make friends, educate and encourage each other. There is a Q&A portion, so it’s basically a forum too. This support group is beneficial because it offers emotional support that most website cannot offer because the members can actually talk to real people going through the same challenges as them. This website is diverse as well because it is free and open to all ages worldwide and anyone can meet anybody with same culture, language, etc.

Websites that offer education and support is beneficial these days when everything is available online. It’s convenient, free and helpful if we know which websites are credible and evidence based so it’s important to evaluate the sites we read before we believe. Most online health information consumers believed they could find the information they wanted in their online searching, and 78% of them reported their success rate of online health information seeking was over 60%. What the health information consumers valued the most included accuracy, currency of information, and ease of understanding (Xiaoyun, et al. 2021).
